Idaho's wedding market is smaller than its neighbours', which cuts both ways: prices are gentler, but the best photographers book out early and there are fewer of them.
Typical investment
Boise-area photographers generally quote $1,600–$3,500 for 8 hours with digital delivery. Entry packages with a single shooter and 5–6 hours start near $1,200; premium studios with a second shooter, album and engagement session reach $4,000–$5,500. Weddings in Sun Valley, McCall or the Sawtooths carry travel and often overnight costs.
Season and light
June through September dominates the Idaho calendar, and September in particular is contested — the light is superb and the heat has broken. Mountain venues bring high-contrast midday sun that punishes inexperienced shooters; ask any candidate how they handle a noon outdoor ceremony without shade. Winter weddings can be gorgeous here, but daylight ends early, so confirm the photographer's flash and low-light approach.
Questions worth asking
Have you shot at my venue, and can I see that gallery? How many weddings do you take per weekend? Who is the actual photographer on my date? What is the delivery timeline and image count? What is the overtime rate? What is your backup plan for illness or a failed card?
Practical advice
Ask to see two full galleries from weddings similar to yours in size and setting. Highlight reels show peak moments; full galleries show consistency, and consistency is what you are actually buying.
