The first dance is ninety seconds of being watched by everyone you know. A few lessons turn that from an ordeal into the part you look forward to.
What lessons cost
Private wedding dance lessons typically run $70–$140 per hour, with most studios offering packages of 3–6 sessions at $250–$700. Full choreography for a surprise routine, or a father-daughter dance added on, usually needs 6–10 sessions.
How many you actually need
Three to four lessons is enough for most couples: one to choose the approach and learn a basic frame, two to build and refine, one final rehearsal close to the date. If neither of you has danced before and you want a full choreographed routine, plan on eight.
Choosing a song that helps you
Tempo matters more than sentiment. Songs between 90 and 120 beats per minute are the easiest to move to; very slow ballads leave long gaps where couples run out of ideas. Check the length too — a 5-minute song is a long time on a dance floor, and most couples are happier with a 2–3 minute edit. Bring the exact recording to lessons; a live band version has different timing.
Practical notes
Practise in shoes similar to the ones you will wear, and if the dress has a train, rehearse with something that mimics it. Ask about the venue's floor surface — a routine built for a studio floor behaves differently on grass or a rented dance floor. Book the last lesson the week of the wedding, not a month before.
