Honeymoon Planning: Timing, Budget and Booking Order

Honeymoon travel planning

The honeymoon is the one part of a wedding that exists purely for the two of you, and it is routinely planned last, badly, and by someone who is exhausted.

What couples spend

Typical honeymoon budgets land between $4,000 and $10,000 for a week to ten days, though the range is enormous. All-inclusive Caribbean resorts sit at the accessible end; multi-stop Europe, safari or overwater bungalows sit well above it. Flights are usually the least flexible cost, so they drive the destination more than the destination drives the flights.

When to book

Book flights 4–6 months ahead for international travel, 2–3 months domestically. Reserve the accommodation first if it is a small property that fills, and the flight first if the route is limited. Passport renewals need 8–12 weeks — check both passports the week you get engaged, not the month you fly.

The buffer day rule

Do not fly out the morning after the wedding. Every planner says this and every couple ignores it once. One buffer day lets you sleep, repack, and start the trip as people rather than as survivors. Departing Monday or Tuesday is also usually cheaper.

Minimoon, then the big trip

Increasingly common and genuinely sensible: a short local escape immediately after the wedding, with the significant trip taken 6–12 months later when finances have recovered and time off is easier to arrange. Honeymoon registries make this easier — guests fund experiences rather than tableware.
